Diagnosis for Autism in Western Australia

If you live in Western Australia there is a private or public path for diagnosis.

  • If you want to go through the public system you can be waitlisted with the State Child Development Centre (9481 2203) or the Disabilities Service Commission (Country 9426 9374 or Metro 9329 2300/9301 3800) and you will go through the diagnostic process when a vacancy occurs.
  • If you wish to go down a private path which is quicker but more expensive you can employ the services of a Psychologist, Paediatrician and Speech Pathologist who are registered to perform the diagnostic testing. Have a look at the website www.waadf.org.au for more information on this process. Alternatively, you can contact the Autism Association (9489 8900) and ask for “The Diagnostic Process for Children, Adolescents and Adults Referred for Assessment of ASD: Family and Service Provider’s Version” which is $6.
  • REMEMBER – you do not need a diagnosis to start a therapy program. If you are investigating whether or not you child qualifies for a diagnosis there are obviously some developmental concerns. If you are on a waiting list, consider talking with professionals about therapy plans that you can commence immediately. The earlier you start therapy the better, so don’t wait to get a diagnosis, GET ON TO IT NOW.
  • CONSIDER – whether or not you wish to get a diagnosis. It may mean that you are unable to access some programs that do not offer places for children on the spectrum but may be appropriate for your child.

A diagnosis is necessary to access Government Early Intervention Services, Centrelink funding and education assistance in schools.
